The holidays can be a magical time of year... or be incredibly stressful, especially if there are hungry family members to feed and little money to do so. To try and bring some joy and nourishment to families throughout Eagle County, The Gallegos Corporation is donating to the Salvation Army’s Food Basket program.

"Part of our mission is to really be involved in the communities where we work. This year we see a greater need than before, families are struggling that have never struggled before," said Gary Woodworth, COO. "The Salvation Army has had a huge increase in demand for food baskets. It feels good to be able to contribute to a worthy organization. And with the tough year behind us, and another challenging one ahead of us, we are trying to provide some much-needed cheer."

The managers at Gallegos decided to forego holiday parties this year and instead use the funds to help the less fortunate families in this community.

"It wasn’t a very hard decision, to tighten our belts to help our neighbors and friends, instead of having a party," Gerald Gallegos said. "I am thankful that we are able to contribute this year."

Some reports suggest the demand for gift baskets may be up as much as thirty percent. With winter in full swing now, what little money people may have will go towards heat and food. Gallegos hopes that contributing to the Food Basket program will allow families a little financial freedom for the holidays… and it hopes to spur other companies to make similar donations.

"If every business gave just a little this holiday season, the Salvation Army would benefit tremendously. That, obviously, would have such a positive impact throughout the county," said Gerald.

The Salvation Army provides food baskets to families in need. The organization helps out throughout the year, but it seems like during the holidays is when the need seems overwhelming.

"I am totally appreciative of the outpouring of help, especially in this economy where so many people need help, even the middle class who never needed help before, needs help this year," said Tsu Wolin-Brown, the executive director of Eagle County’s Salvation Army.

The organization gave out more than 500 food baskets for Thanksgiving and she anticipates having to give out close to 600 for Christmas.

The Gallegos Corporation will also contribute to the Food Bank of the Rockies in Denver, The Hunger Coalition in Idaho and the Salvation Army in the Roaring Fork Valley.
