The holiday season should be a time of laughter, warmth and cheer. However, for those families on a strained budget, the impending holiday can be a very stressful time instead of one full of joy. To try and bring some peace and cheer to families throughout the Roaring Fork Valley, The Gallegos Corporation is donating to the Salvation Army’s gift card program. By giving a family a gift card, they can get what they need to make their holiday personal and special, said Stacy Durrett, the Operations Manager of the Salvation Army.
"Part of our mission is to really be involved in the communities where we work. This year we see a greater need than before, families are struggling that have never struggled before," said Gary Woodworth, COO. "The Salvation Army has had an enormous increase in demand for its services. And with the tough year behind us, and another challenging one ahead of us, we are trying to provide some much-needed cheer."
The managers at Gallegos decided to forego holiday parties this year and instead use the funds to help the less fortunate families in this community.
"It wasn’t a very hard decision, to tighten our belts to help our neighbors and friends, instead of having a party," Gerald Gallegos, CEO, said. "I am thankful that we are able to contribute this year."
The contribution could not come at a more necessary time, either, said Stacy. This year the organization has helped four times as many families over last year—almost 2200 so far.
"Winter is always tougher. There are more utility bills, more costs associated with transportation," Stacy added. Gallegos hopes the gift cards will allow families a little financial freedom for the holidays… and it hopes to spur other companies to make similar donations.
"If every business gave just a little this holiday season, the Salvation Army would benefit tremendously. That, obviously, would have such a positive impact throughout the county," said Jim Bingaman, President of Aspen Masonry. "This should be a season of joy. I hope our donation helps those who need it."
The Salvation Army helps families throughout the year, but it seems like during the holidays is when the need seems overwhelming.
The Gallegos Corporation will also contribute to the Food Bank of the Rockies in Denver, The Hunger Coalition in Idaho and the Salvation Army in Eagle County.
