If kids cannot come to the library, the library should come to the kids, right? With the unveiling of The Youth Foundation’s new Book Buddy van, the newest addition to the literacy fleet, that is exactly what will happen for the kids in Red Cliff and Leadville.
The Gallegos Corporation teamed up with The Youth Foundation to create a program similar to the Magic Bus, which has been visiting children from Vail to Dotsero every week for twelve years. The company donated a van outfitted with shelves to store numerous books to help give kids a head start in their most formative years.
“The Magic Bus has done a tremendous job bringing books to kids throughout the valley, and we are excited to help launch the Book Buddy for children in Red Cliff and Leadville,” Gerald Gallegos, founder and CEO of The Gallegos Corporation said. “If we can get just one child interested in reading, or affect a positive change in someone’s life, I’ll be thrilled.”
The Book Buddy is hard to miss, embellished with fanciful characters holed up reading their favorite books. The whimsical van should attract kids who are eager to discover what is inside—both literally and figuratively. The Youth Foundation expects the Book Buddy to influence 450 families, and will be starting its rounds this month.
In addition to donating the van, Gerald surprised The Youth Foundation with seed money for materials for the Book Buddy—a check in the amount of $10,000 was given to Susie Davis, executive director of The Youth Foundation.
“We are so thankful to have Gerald Gallegos in particular and The Gallegos Corporation overall be involved with The Youth Foundation,” Susie Davis said. “Gerald has been a champion for children for years and he really was a huge catalyst for us to be able to provide the community with another outreach service. He really goes above and beyond in helping our organization and all children in our communities.”
So the next time you are out on the open road and you see a traveling van, give that Book Buddy a wave—it just might be heading to your neighborhood! To find out more about The Youth Foundation and its programs, please call 763.7000.
